Dr. Stanard is the Principal/Chief Executive Officer of SOS Human Capital Solutions, LLC, a recruitment and staffing, training and development, workforce development, and facilities support business in Washington, DC, and Maryland. She provides overall strategic leadership and management in this role, setting the organization’s strategic direction and overseeing its day-to-day operations and growth.
Before this, she was the Senior Executive Director in the Office of the Principal Deputy Chief Operating Officer (PDCOO) for the Department of Education. She also served as acting PDOO and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Management and Planning in the Office for Civil Rights, Department of Education. In these roles, she was the principal management and planning official responsible for overseeing and directing all areas of planning, developing, and implementing the budget, operations, procurement, human resources, information technology, communications, and policies. Her career also included serving as the Department’s Office of Federal Student Aid’s Human Resources Director and Senior Advisor to the Chief Administration Officer and PDCOO, managing human capital services to deliver efficient and cost-effective operations.
Her other key leadership roles include Director of Management Services, Executive Officer, Chief of Staff, Deputy Director of Human Resources, Chief of Executive Resources, Director Training Needs Assessment, and Program Manager for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. Postal Service, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Dr. Stanard earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Development from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech), a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, and a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication with a minor in Human Resource Management from Bowie State University. She is also a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program graduate.
As a lifelong public servant, Dr. Stanard currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Revenue Authority of Prince George’s County (PG), MD; President of Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA); Lifetime member of BSUNAA; Two-time inductee of the BSUNAA Sports Hall of Fame; Board of Directors for Sowing Empowerment & Economic Development (SEED), Riverdale, MD; Chair of the Board of Director for Charlotte’s Web, District Heights, MD; former Commissioner for the Charter Review Commission & Compensation Review, Prince George’s County, MD; a former member of the Local Development Council, and MGM National Harbor, Prince George’s County, MD.
Dr. Stanard is a proud former Miss Bowie State University and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She is married to Sherrod M. Stanard, a graduate of Bowie State University. Together, they have five daughters (Brianna, Bijon, Starr, Simone, and Sherron), three grandsons (Christian, Bryson, and Braxton), and one granddaughter (Aria).
Valerie Hough Cromartie is an entrepreneur, mentor, public servant and natural born leader. She currently serves as the Vice-President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) for the 2024-2026 term. She has been a leader for the majority of her life, and has a passion for guiding others to fulfill their goals. Valerie’s tenacity has made it possible for her to achieve all that her heart desires. Her love for her alma mater, the Bowie State University (BSU), motivated her to start the ground work to create a new alumni chapter. Valerie’s determination and persistence helped her to successfully lead this initiative through the application process. As a result, the Bulldog Empowerment Alumni Chapter (BEAC) became a chartered Alumni Chapter of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) in April 2017. Later that year, she was presented the New Leaders Award by the BSUNAA at the Annual Scholarship Gala. Valerie was the first President of BEAC and served in that position for seven years, as well as a member of the BSUNAA Board of Directors during that period. She is still an active member of BEAC.
Valerie has over thirty-four years of Federal government service, the past sixeen of those years as a Cybersecurity Professional. Her agency recently honored her with the 2024 Cybersecurity Leader of the year award. She has over twenty-four years of experience as the CEO and founder, of her own wedding and event planning company. Valerie’s planning experience was well demonstrated when she solely planned and hosted a successful fundraiser event, in support of BSU being named “Tom Joyner’s School of the Month”.
Valerie’s passion for teaching and guiding others is best portrayed in her role as a mentor. Valerie served as a mentor from 2012 – 2019, with College Bound, Inc., a Washington, DC based non-profit organization, which offers eighth through twelfth grade public and public charter school students academic enrichment and resources to prepare for and succeed in college. This is just one example of Valerie’s love, not only for her alma mater, but also for overall student success.
Valerie holds a Master of Science degree in Management Information Systems and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, both from Bowie State University. Valerie is a proud Life Member of the BSUNAA and a member of the 100K Bulldog Club. She served as the Co-Chair for the BSUNAA 30th Annual Scholarship Gala (Gala) and the Chair of the Entertainment Committee for the 29th BSUNAA Gala. Valerie also holds a Certificate in Women’s Entrepreneurship from Cornell University.
Valerie currently resides in Maryland with her husband, Willie. She is the mother to Lamont, and bonus children, Jasmine and Jalonni.
Darren Swain, a former Maryland state legislator, is dedicated to public service and visionary leadership. Representing the 24th Legislative District, he served on the Commerce and Government Matters Committee and later, under Governor Martin O’Malley, on the Judiciary Committee. With experience in both public and private sectors, Mr. Swain served as a senior economic development assistant under Prince George’s County Executive Wayne K. Curry, contributing to projects like FedEx Field and the Wayne K. Curry Sports and Learning Complex.
Currently Mr. Swain leads his own Consultant Firm, DMS & Associates and serves as Deputy Campaign Manager for Prince George’s County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks. He also holds leadership posts on several non-profit boards, including Bowie State University National Alumni Association (2nd Vice President), W3PV (Senior Advisor) and the Lottsford, Legend Glenn, Glensford Recreation Association, Inc. (President).
Alia Muhammad Shabazz has over 20 years of operations and human resource experience in the private sector and federal government. She began her federal career as a 2001 Presidential Management Intern. She currently works for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service, Office of Habitat Conservation as the Director for Operations, Management and Information Services Division. She leads a Division responsible for an over $840 million dollar budget.
Alia received a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the Bowie State University. She also holds a Certificate in Public Leadership from the Brookings Institution. She is a life member of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) and member of the Bulldog Empowerment Alumni Chapter (BEAC). She recently represented BEAC on the BSUNAA Election Committee. As an undergraduate, Alia was elected as the Executive Member at Large for the Student Government Association, and the President for the class of 1994.
She is the proud mother of two children. Her daughter graduated with honors from Morgan State University and currently attends Brooklyn Law School. Her son is a junior at the Bowie State University majoring in Business Administration.

Veronica Champion is a Registered Nurse at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, where she provides care to pediatric patients. She began her educational journey with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism from Bowie State University before transitioning into the nursing field. Veronica later earned an Associate’s Degree in Registered Nursing from Prince George’s Community College in Largo, MD, and went on to complete her RN to Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
Veronica serves on the Executive Board for the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) as Corresponding Secretary. She is also a member of the Bowie Metropolitan Alumni Chapter (BMAC).
Veronica is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She serves in the Prince George’s County Alumni Chapter. Additionally, Veronica is a Board Member of the Woodyard Estates Community in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Veronica is a member of New Grove Baptist Church in Washington, DC. She currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Trustee Board, President of the Education Ministry, Vice-President of the Missionary Ministry, and Sunday School teacher.
Above all, Veronica is the proud mother to two daughters, Danielle Champion, a graduate of Bowie State University, and Cierra Champion.
Renada Johnson is a distinguished leader and advocate in the field of child welfare and youth empowerment. Residing in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and a proud alumna of Bowie State University, Renada has dedicated her career to enhancing the lives of youth and families through innovative programming and strong community engagement.
With over 25 years of experience in the child welfare system, Renada has significantly impacted family dynamics and reduced cycles of abuse and neglect. She has served in pivotal roles, from the Director of Youth and Birth Family Engagement at the National Center for Children and Families, where she spearheaded impactful community initiatives, to her current leadership position at Lutheran Services in America. There, she directs the Results Innovation Lab, developing solutions that foster equity for communities disproportionately affected by the child welfare system.
As a long-standing Executive Director of Kiamsha Youth Empowerment Organization, Renada leverages historical education and intensive character development to transform mentees into mentors, advocating for abstinence from pre-mature sexual activity, drugs, violence, and prejudice. Her collaborations with organizations like the National Park Service and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History have notably expanded the organization’s influence.
A renowned keynote speaker and trainer, Renada imparts her expertise on topics such as youth development, leadership, organizational development, emotional intelligence, cultural competency, and character development to educators, child welfare experts, parents and community leaders. She actively engages with youth on pivotal topics including social media, leadership, Black History, and public speaking, guiding them through their formative years with confidence and insight. Her mentorship has cultivated a pipeline of over 400 community leaders and mental health professionals, underscoring her commitment to nurturing the next generation.
Renada’s personal motto, “Be who you had,” reflects her gratitude for the mentors who shaped her life, inspiring her ongoing dedication to service and leadership. Through her professional endeavors and personal dedication, Renada Johnson continues to be a transformative force in community development and youth advocacy.
Marnia Thomas currently works for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as a Career Manager. Marnia has worked with DHS since 2009. Prior to becoming a Federal Employee at DHS, Marnia was a Contract Manager, successfully running a contract while working for DHS, managing a team of over 40 employees. In addition to the management of her team, Marnia was also responsible for preparing and presenting the contract deliverables to the Federal Executives to assure them that the Contractors on board were getting things done per the contract mandates. Following her tenure as a Contract Manager, DHS offered Marnia a Leadership position with the Personnel Security Branch, as a federal employee. Marnia has been with DHS since. In addition to her current primary role as a Career Manager, Marnia is also facilitating various Coaching and Mentoring opportunities to a wide variety of employees, as a Certified Career Coach. In 2024, Marnia served as the Chairwoman of the Human Capital, Employee Advisory Council. Marnia also earned her Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) certification as a Mediator, meaning she possesses the skill and ability to not only mediate cases for DHS, but she can also mediate cases for any with an ADR or a situation in need of mediation. Marnia has been identified by the agency as a Mediator who can “find a way, when there is no way.” Marnia also achieved her Human Resources certification while working at DHS. Marnia is a native of Washington, D.C., she grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland where she attended and graduated from Montgomery Blair High School as a scholar-athlete who played Women’s Basketball, Softball and participated in Track and Field events. Marnia left Montgomery County and headed to Prince George’s County to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a Criminal Justice Law Concentration at Bowie State University (BSU), the first Historical Black College and University (HBCU) in Maryland, where she began her collegiate life as a scholar-athlete. Marnia participated in Women’s Basketball and Volleyball, not only as a member of the team, but as Team Captain for both sports. Following the achievement of her Bachelor of Science degree Marnia joined the Bulldog Empowerment Alumni Chapter (BEAC), a local BSU alumni chapter in Prince George’s County, Maryland where she currently resides. As a new member to BEAC Marnia learned early that the Chapter was losing a Recording Secretary and needed a volunteer to takeover that position. After being voted in, Marnia was appointed into the position and became the Recording Secretary of the Executive Committee for BEAC. In 2024, Marnia changed her role, and is now the Sergeant at Arms for the Chapter, still serving as a member of the Executive Committee. Marnia is also a lifetime member of the BSU National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) where she serves on the Executive Board as the Parliamentarian. In this role Marnia will work diligently alongside the President to maintain meeting order. Marnia also served as the Temporary Executive Administrator (EA) alongside the past President, while BSUNAA sought a permanent EA.
After graduating from BSU, Marnia earned two master’s degrees, one in Organizational Leadership and one in Human Services. Marnia has strived for her personal growth and development in her educational and professional responsibilities. Marnia’s main goal that she as placed over her life is to continue to grow herself so she can positively and progressively become a change agent and impact and assist in the growth and development of others. Marnia is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Philosophy at Walden University, with a 2025 graduation year target. Although her current responsibilities as a Ph.D. Candidate absorb a portion of her personal time, Marnia continually and consistently offers life, career, administrative and relationship advisement to many people in her professional and personal world. Marnia’s personal philosophy is: “My personal accomplishments can and may be applauded, but they mean nothing unless they can positively impact and enhance the lives of others.”
Marnia enjoys spending her time with family and friends. When asked to describe her love for BSU, she responds, “I bleed black and gold ‘til the day I die. Anything I can do to give back to my Alma Mater, consider it done!”
Nicholas L. Myles is the current Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at St Frances Academy in Baltimore, MD. Coach Myles is a Baltimore native and a 1997 graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. At the end of his tenure at Dunbar Nicholas’s love for basketball afforded the opportunity to play for the basketball team as preferred walk-on lead him to Bowie State University. Once he arrived he quickly learned Bowie State had so much more to offer than basketball. Graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History & Government, Nichoals not only excelled in the classroom but significantly made his presence known outside of it as well.
During his tenure at Bowie, Nicholas participated in basketball from 1997-1999. He was initiated into the Eta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity incorporated in the spring of 1999. During this time Nicholas started to understand the importance of student leadership so he became the Chapter President for Eta Zeta Chapter from 2000-2002 along with being assistant District Director Mid Atlantic Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters from 2000-2001. Nicholas also served in the Student Government Association (2000-2001) as the Executive Member at Large, during the tenure its cabinet’s major accomplishment was raising the Student Government budget from $90,000 to $200,000 for the following school year. Lastly as the Executive Member at Large Nicholas’s love for sports, especially basketball, led his cabinet to implement the first formal Intramural Sports Basketball & Flag Football Leagues, which are still currently active on the campus of BSU today.
Saint Frances School for Colored Girls was opened by Mother Mary Lange and the Oblate Sisters of Providence in 1828. Gradually the name changed to Saint Frances Academy by mid century. The school moved to its current location on East Chase Street in 1871. It became co-educational in the mid 1970s. It is the oldest, predominantly African-American Catholic High School in the United States. They’ve been serving their community for over 185 years! Under Myles leadership as Athletic Director, St Frances Academy has won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (Girls Athletic League which features 29 Baltimore Area Private Schools) Girls Volleyball “C” Conference Championships in 2016 & 2017 IAAM Girls Basketball “Conference Championships 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019,2020. St Frances has also won Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Athletic League which features 32 private schools from the Baltimore Metro Area in Football Championship “C”Conference in 2011 & 2012 & “A” Conference Championship in 2016, 2017 & 2018. The St Frances Academy football team is currently 2nd in the country by Max Preps & ESPN. Under Myles in his 14th season, the Panther Boys Basketball have won six league championships- four in the MIAA Championship (2013,2016,2018,2023) and four in the Baltimore Catholic League Championships (2018 & 2019&2020,2024) FIve Straight Regular Season Baltimore Catholic League Titles (2018, 2019,2000,2021,2022,. Myles current record is 380-125. The most important accomplishment over Myles tenure is 110 kids under his leadership receive full Athletic Scholarships to College & Universities throughout the country.
As a member of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association Myles is a life member of the Baltimore Chapter as well as the National Association. He has currently held the position of National Homecoming Committee Cheer 2023-25 as well as the Co-Chair of the BSUNNA CIAA Committee. Myles credits his success to the meaningful years as relationships he developed at his beloved alma mater. BSU!!!!!!!!
Jerrod Hines is a distinguished alumnus of Bowie State University, where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. During his time at Bowie State, Jerrod demonstrated exceptional leadership as the Student Government Association President from 2004 to 2005. He was an active member of the “Symphony of Soul” marching band, and both the University and Gospel choirs. Jerrod also served as a Residential Assistant and was involved with the Psychological Society, showcasing his commitment to both academics and community.
As a proud lifetime member of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Jerrod has contributed significantly to various initiatives, including serving on the CIAA Alumni Planning Committee and helping to organize alumni homecoming events. His dedication to his alma mater is evident in his ongoing support and involvement with the alumni community. In addition to his contributions to Bowie State, Jerrod is a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. With over 20 years of experience in K-12 education, he currently holds the position of Chief of Staff at Bright Beginnings, Inc., where he continues to impact the lives of students and families. Jerrod also serves as the Associate Director of Music at Reid Temple AME (Glenn Dale, Maryland).
